After the Fantoni War, Goose was actually kind of salty that Sky made more contributions than she did. Her apprentice has now earned honorary retirement, went back to teach at his alma mater. But she is still in the trenches.
That was when she received the call. Transfer to Flower City and work on one of the biggest cases Bauhinia had seen.
There is a reasonable suspicion that there are Moose moles, hidden among the highest ranks of Bauhinian state security. More than one. They entrusted Goose to handle the case, because everyone in Flower City is potentially compromised.
Who raised this suspicion in the first place? It was none other than Kismet. He won't go down in the trenches himself though, which is why he had his sights on this fierce young woman from Coastline, who assisted in catching a mole back then before the war.
Now Goose has to navigate the intricate politics in Bauhinia's ancient capital. The city is like a tight-knit flower bud, dead before it could bloom, rotting from the inside, refusing to let any outsiders in. But she would rip the Ministry apart with her might, dead set on her goal, no matter how many innocents she kills in the process. Later, the mole hunt would turn into one of the deadliest purges in the history of the MSS. All of this, to find the one mole, deeply embedded into our ranks.
There were five of them, ran by Jackalope of the MIC. Before Goose found out their real names, she called them Pawn, Rook, Knight, Bishop, and Queen. The Gambit Five. She would catch the latter four, but the Pawn was hidden and elusive. The purge was launched to find the Pawn and disassemble Jackalope's network for good. But in the end, even Kismet had to ask himself, was it worth the cost?
Afterwards, Goose retired and went back to Coastline to watch sloppy soap opera all day and do taiji at the park.
I still need to read up a lot on the Cambridge Five before further developing this story.
